You might be fatigued from seeing Zoom screenshots, but the Tenang Lifegroup is not!
Think age is a barrier to participating in Christian fellowship online? Think again. At 90, Mrs Tan Lye Im has used Zoom to keep in touch with members of her LifeGroup. Read on to find out more from Group Leader Lye Im on how her Seniors LifeGroup went online.
Tenang LifeGroup has been meeting faithfully twice a month since March 2017. We are an offshoot of the 37-year-old Hillcourt LifeGroup, which Auntie Lian Neo had worked so hard for. The group was formed because she wanted it to continue to grow and bless all who are faithful to God.
Our group consists of very senior members from different churches, five of whom are from Kampong Kapor Methodist Church (KKMC). Originally, there were eleven of us, but one of our founding members, Auntie Kwee Yim, has sadly passed on. Our newest members are KKMC’s Michael and Patricia Tay who joined us in January this year. We now have 12 members coming together every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month (except June and December) to study God’s word, and we are happy to have Brother Ivan Ho to help us with this.
Our members get along very well, singing praises to God and worshipping God in spirit and in truth. We are very keen to learn God’s Word and to apply what we learnt into our daily lives. We pray fervently for the church, the missionaries, the sick, the needy, and for everyone who needs God’s help. We rejoice in the Lord always and were meeting regularly until the COVID-19 pandemic set in and social distancing measures were imposed. Our LifeGroup last met on 9 March 2020 in person.
Then, in late May, Ivan suggested that we carry on with our meetings via Zoom. “What? A Zoom meeting?” I said. “How do we go about it, Ivan?” Thank God my grandson had given me an iPad (which this 90-year-old had a hard time learning to operate). Slowly and patiently, Elaine and Ivan taught this group of senior citizens how to download and use Zoom.
Wow! We seniors had to go through the pains of learning how to use Zoom. It was very trying on our part, but we were encouraged to persevere so that we could continue to study God’s Word, to know more about God and love God as He first loved us. We tried so hard! Finally, most of us managed to get into a Zoom meeting on 8 June 2020.
With God’s help all things are possible. Praise the Lord! I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13).
