From the Librarian’s Shelf: Two books and one DVD on Nehemiah

Posted on 29 Feb 2024

As a church, we will be studying the book of Nehemiah in 2024 through a series of sermons preached during Sunday worship. The church library hopes that the following two books and one DVD will help you and your family in your study of Nehemiah.

1. Life Lessons from Ezra and Nehemiah by Max Lucado

Two leaders, one burning mission: restoration. When the people of Israel returned to Jerusalem after their exile in Babylon, they found the city laid waste, the temple destroyed, and their way of life obliterated. Out of the ashes of this devastation, two leaders emerged to restore the foundations of their worship and their city. Ezra, the first to return, set out to restore true worship in Jerusalem by reminding the people of God’s teaching, what it meant for them, and how it should shape their lives. Nehemiah, the next to arrive, exchanged his royal cupbearer’s robes for coveralls and got to work rebuilding the wall. The project took twelve years and was an uphill battle all the way – with grumpy workers, squabbles, and enemies lurking at every turn. The efforts of these men reveal just how much God can accomplish in our lives when we follow where he leads.

2. Ezra and Nehemiah: An Introduction and Commentary by Derek Kidner

“The chequered story of the Kings, a matter of nearly five centuries, had ended disastrously in 587 B.C. with the sack of Jerusalem, the fall of the monarchy and the removal to Babylonia of all that made Judah politically viable. It was a death to make way for a rebirth.” So begins Derek Kidner in this introduction and commentary to the books of Ezra and Nehemiah which chart the Jews’ return from exile to Jerusalem and the beginnings of that rebirth. As the drama unfolds, we see how international politics, nationalist pride, wise leadership, political intrigue and opportunism, internal dissension and compromise all shape events. But above all and through all we see the good hand of God at work.

3. Buck Denver Asks… What’s in the Bible? Volume 7: Exile and Return

In Volume 7: Exile and Return! [Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther], Buck Denver and friends learn about the Israelites’ return to the kingdom of Israel after being exiled for many years. Ezra and Nehemiah lead the efforts to rebuild the temple and Jerusalem’s city walls, and Chester Whigget’s Popsicle Stick Theater presents the Story of Esther!
