From the Librarian’s Shelf: Three books and one DVD in the church library on John Wesley and Methodism

Posted on 24 May 2023

On 24 May, we and other Methodists remember the day in 1738 when John Wesley felt his heart “strangely warmed” at a meeting at Aldersgate, London. He later said in his journal that “I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone, for salvation; and an assurance was given me that he had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.” The church library hopes that these 3 books and 1 DVD on the life of John Wesley and earlier Methodists will continue to inspire you to live your life for God just as they did.

1. Wesley on the Christian Life: The Heart Renewed in Love by Fred Sanders

It is hard to overstate the significance of John Wesley’s legacy for the church today. From his revivalist enthusiasm to his teaching on Christian perfection, Wesley’s writings exude evangelistic zeal and a passion for faithfulness in all areas of life. Combining history with theology, this helpful introduction to Wesley’s life and beliefs is an excellent addition to the Theologians on the Christian Life series of books.

2. Days of Darkness Days of Light (Published by The Methodist Church in Singapore)

Days of Darkness Days of Light is specially compiled to tell an important story. It is about the Singapore Methodist Community’s experience during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore. This book about the experience of the war-time generation is written for the present-time generation of Singaporean Christians. It is hoped that these stories of the dark years will encourage faith and provide lessons for living, and to show that although those were days of darkness, the Light of God still prevails.

3. John Wesley: The World, My Parish by Favian Ee

The life and teachings of John Wesley are foundational to the Methodist movement, influencing our church practice and doctrine even until today. How much do you know about our founder’s life, his struggles, and convictions? How did Methodism spread around the world and grow in Singapore? This book will tell our history vividly and accurately in an easy-to-read and engaging way. Our hope is for everyone to be inspired and edified by John Wesley and our Methodist pioneers.

4. Wesley: A Heart Transformed Can Change the World (DVD)

John Wesley is well known as the spiritual father of Methodism. Step into eighteenth-century England and experience the transformation of one man whose heart-wrenching search for peace haunts him even as he pours himself into a life of service and evangelism. Now, for the first time, Wesley’s fascinating spiritual struggle is presented in this award-winning feature film based on John’s own private journals. From a person who questioned his own faith to one whose spiritual legacy includes over 70 million Christians of the Wesleyan/Methodist tradition, the movie shows the power of a transformed heart that has been touched by God.
