Lenten & Easter Pastoral Letter

Read the Tamil Letter

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord and Saviour.

Jesus said,
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Matthew 5: 3 – 12 (ESV)

These pronouncements or teachings of Jesus are commonly known collectively as the Beatitudes. “Beatitude” comes from the Latin word beati which means “happy” or “blessed”; in the ancient Latin translation of the Bible (the Vulgate), each line of the Beatitudes begins with beati (e.g. beati pauperes spiritu…, blessed are the poor in spirit…). But can the Beatitudes really be true?

The seasons of Lent and Easter testify to and offer the apologetic for the truth and validity of these Beatitudes. Lent recalls Jesus’ forty days in the wilderness, fasting and being tempted by Satan (Matthew 4:1-11), his ministry of humble, compassionate service, and his resolute journey to the cross, subjecting himself to ridicule, rejection, threats, betrayal, injustice, torture, and finally death at the hands of those who hate him. His very life demonstrated that in this fallen world, those who do not rejoice in sin, those who exercise restraint, those who are kind to others, those who seek peace before personal rights, those who seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness – all such persons who will not fall in line with the fallen world can expect to fall in this world. Nothing happy or blessed about that. But Easter, recalling the resurrection of Christ, testifies that such qualities are spiritual fruits that will last – although they may not be rewarded in the present temporal world, they will be rewarded in the world to come at the resurrection.

Therefore, observing Lent with fasting, prayer, and giving, let us deny ourselves and carry our cross, and follow our Master, Jesus Christ (Matthew 16:24), and bear these beatitudinal fruits that consists in eternal life.

Lenten Fast, Pray & Give

In Lent (18 February to 4 April 2026), let us fast and pray together as a church.

Fasting

In this season, let us fast from food, or a non-essential that we regularly spend our time and money on. For guidance on different ways you may fast, read the guide below.

Praying

Let’s spend the time that would have been used for that meal, or making the purchase, to pray. As a church, and with our families, let us gather to pray together online on Wednesday and Friday nights during Lent. During this time of praying together online, we will memorise the Beatitudes together, reflecting on Jesus’ words week by week. A memorisation activity will also be provided to help children and families participate meaningfully.

As we follow our Lord Jesus in the way of the cross, may God strengthen us with power through his Spirit in our inner being, so that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith—that we, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that we may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:16-21)
